Sfuilftrdian [ 1976 New BASIB Executive Officers The (Brothers and Sisters in Blackness) organization, 8.A.5.1.8. recently inaugu rated new executive officers and cabinet officers for the next two school semesters. Last year's selections and installation service opened a tradition for these election activities to be processed during the first semester of a school year in addition to the installation service would include a short program and a dinner. At this dinner the officers are to be inducted as the official new executive officers of 8.A.5.1.8. for one full schoolyear from date. This year 8.A.5.1.8. was able to conduct these services in this traditional manner. During the fall semester of 1975 many black students at Guilford College had a diversity of problems or difficulties in the areas of housing, academics, financial aid, and in psychologically adjusting to a new year at Guilford College. However, these confrontations were not only experienced by upper -classmen, but by freshmen and transfer students as well. I'm sure returning to college each new year or for the first time is not an immediate adjustment period for many Affirmative Action Guilford College president Grimsley Hobbs announces • hat Bud Place has been appointed Affirmative Action Officer for the College. He will be responsible for the development and implementa tion of the College Affirmative Action Plan. The following memorandum was issued to all Guilford College Faculty and Staff: Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, and Presidential Executive Order 11246, as amended, makes equal employment opportun ity the law of the Nation. These laws apply to all segments of American society, including educational institu tions. In essence, it is now unlawful to discriminate in any personnel action because students. Some say that everyone has a semester in one's college career that is filled with some minute or major problem in their academic learning experience. As a minority group in sharing special needs and interest in the college at large black students atGuilford College as a minority student not only needs to feel secure in the areas of academics, in school finances, and in comfort in our respective dormitory situa tions, but we need to feel psychologically secure as well. These problems not only have the potential of developing in the group of black students at Guilford College, but all students share these exper iences. However, these col lege experiences coupled with family and other special problems have effected the incentive and motivation needed for 8.A.5.1.8. as a campus organization. In fact these things are defined in time past and aspirations are in the present and future, though our past has made us what we have come to be, if not in mind, in spirit. This we share. of race, creed, color, religion, sex, age or national origin. These personnel actions include, but are not limited to, employment, upgrading, de motion, transfer, recruitment, recruitment advertisement, layoff or termination, rates of pay, training opportunities, or other forms of compensation. Guilford College will adhere to the provisions of the law in all of its personnel actions. In complying with the spirit and the letter of the legal requirement, the College is seeking to meet even more fully its moral obligation to ensure that all citizens have equal employment opportu nity as well as the chance to grow and develop to the fullest of their potential. This year the 8.A.5.1.8. organization and black stu dents came together to share a common social and cultural background in efforts to organize ourselves as a concerned, productive part of cultural and public activity in the Guilford College commu nity. There was also a collective need felt to responsibilities in the execu tive administration of 8.A.5.- 1.8. which inspired the . organizing i of an Executive Cabinet. Each member of the faculty and staff must assure that every reasonable action is being taken to make equal opportunity a clear reality. According, faculty and staff members are asked to cooperate in developing and implementing the Guilford College Affirmative Action Plan in a manner consistent with the law and the moral beliefs in which we have long been pledged. The Staff Healing Lecture Announced David Alan Levy, Instructor in T'ai Chi Ch'uan and Inner Light Consciousness semi nars, will speak on Healing in the New Age Saturday, April 3, at 8 p.m. in the Moon Room, Dana Auditorium. David, a graduate of Goddard College and London University, studied T'ai Chi Ch'uan in New York for many years with Professor Cheng, one of the great masters, who brought it to the Western World. Levy is also president of the Vedanta Yoga Society in America.
